Living Authentically: The Truths We Hide and the Ones We Find
In life, we all tell little lies—whether to others or ourselves. It’s not always about grand deceptions; sometimes it’s those small fibs we use to dodge discomfort or protect our feelings. But at the heart of it all, the journey toward living truthfully begins when we confront these stories and embrace who we truly are.
Today, I, Nico Starr, invite you to join me in exploring these hidden truths—the ones we tell others and, more importantly, the ones we tell ourselves.
Why We Lie
Lying is a multifaceted behavior influenced by various factors. Some people, like pathological liars, navigate their lives with a different perspective, while many of us lean toward “little white lies” to avoid conflict or spare someone’s feelings.
Picture the last time you went out to dinner and pretended to enjoy a meal you secretly disliked. It’s almost instinctive, right? Our bodies and minds often nudge us to keep the peace, even when it means bending the truth.
One of the biggest lies we hear is that “time heals all wounds.” From my experience, this couldn’t be further from the truth. After losing my mother and father in quick succession, I can attest that the void remains. Time doesn’t heal; it offers perspective. What helps me move forward is embracing my authenticity and acknowledging that this loss has become a part of my story.
Embracing Authenticity
During a leadership program at work, I participated in an exercise to identify my core values. Through this process, I realized that accountability and integrity are pivotal to who I am. It became clear that even small lies create dissonance within us. When we betray our own truths, it can manifest as stress or physical discomfort.
I’m still on my journey—neither a hero nor a victim. I’m simply a witness to my own story, and this perspective helps me understand why others might lie as well. Embracing honesty with ourselves can be incredibly liberating.
Detecting Lies
Recognizing lies from others isn’t always easy. You might notice small inconsistencies, shifts in body language, or defensive behavior. But people often lie to themselves, too.
Ever wondered how to spot a lie? It can be tricky! Here are some signs to look for:
- Inconsistency: Liars often struggle to keep their stories straight.
- Body Language: Signs like avoiding eye contact or fidgeting can be telling indicators.
- Contradictory Expressions: Mismatched words and facial expressions often raise red flags.
- Defensive Language: If someone gets defensive or deflects blame quickly, they may be hiding something.
A Practice in Presence
Spotting lies—whether in the outside world or within—requires mindfulness. We need to slow down, reflect, and tune into the present moment. Here’s an exercise I’ve found helpful:
Take a few minutes to reflect on the things you love to experience with your senses.
- What’s your favorite smell? Fresh coffee? The ocean breeze?
- What sound makes you feel at peace? Birds singing? A favorite song?
- What textures calm you? The feel of a cozy blanket or sand between your toes?
This simple practice brings you back into your body, grounding you in what’s real. It helps you step out of your head and back into the moment—where truth can be found.
Embracing Our Imperfections
At the end of the day, the hardest lies to confront are the ones we tell ourselves. And let’s be real—none of us are perfectly honest or kind all the time. But that’s okay. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s authenticity.
Living authentically means owning up to our flaws and mistakes without shame. It’s about giving ourselves grace to be human, while still holding space for growth.
Closing Thoughts
Thank you for joining me on this journey of self-reflection. Remember, living truthfully isn’t about getting it right all the time—it’s about staying honest with yourself and aligned with your values, even when it’s uncomfortable.
If this post resonated with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you deal with the little lies—both the ones you hear and the ones you tell yourself? Let’s grow together in truth.
And hey—don’t forget to subscribe for more conversations like this. But no pressure, because at the end of the day, the magic in your life comes from you being exactly who you are.
Until next time, Nico signing off.
